Welcome to our Year 4 Blog
Welcome to our Year 4 blog! We will be sharing examples of the children’s work and telling you all about life in year 4 at Winchester House School.

We found an Egyptian Tomb!
Year 3 and 4 had a letter in the holidays telling them that an amazing discovery had been found by the British Archaeological Society. A representative (called Mr Carter) came and told the children he had found a canopic jar at the school and that meant there must be more Egyptian artefacts to find. He asked the children to help him find more.
Marvelous Middle – Flight to Alaska
Year 4 came to school today in warm clothes, with bags and their home made passports. They discovered that the Seligman building had become Heathrow Airport and they were going to fly to Alaska to see Immi. They had to check-in in Mrs Easterbrook’s room, hand over their passports to be stamped, have their luggage weighed, go through security in Miss Rees-Stoner’s and then go through to the departure lounge in Miss Leonce’s room where they could buy sweets and relax before their flight. The children were then taken over to the gate, ready for boarding the plane (the school hall). Waiting for them was their pilot, Mr Hoskins and a team of cabin crew to help them find their seats. Cabin crew served them an in-flight snack to have while they watched their in-flight entertainment. The plane even had a rather bumpy landing but a lot of fun was had by all.
BBC Two – Alaska’s: Earth’s Frozen Kingdom
The timing of this program couldn’t have been better to go with our topic. If you missed it, you can watch it here on iplayer. It is available for another 29 days.
Year 4 Work on Immi
Year 4 found CCTV footage of a girl entering the Seligman building with a dog. What was she doing here?
Who is Immi? Where is she from?

Illuminated Letters
As part of their history lessons, Y4SEP learnt all about Anglo-Saxon runes. They carved their names into a soap each, using the Anglo-Saxon alphabet, the Futhork. They then drew an illuminated letter of the first initial, just like the monks used to and then they used a real feather quill and ink to make their designs stand out. They then coloured their letters and illuminated them with some silver and gold.
What was found in the Staffordshire Hoard?
Y4 SEP are using the chrome books and this website: http://www.chiddingstone.kent.sch.uk/homework/saxons/suttonhoo.htm to research what was found at Sutton Hoo.
Since the finds at Sutton Hoo, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold has since been discovered in Staffordshire. I would like my class to find out what items were discovered and to comment below, describing their chosen find. If they do, they will earn themselves two house points.
Happy hunting!
Year 4 Start Blogging
Year 4 are learning how to blog in ICT this term. To get to their blog, go to http://kidblog.org/whsyear4. They can then access it at school or at home.
In our first session, the children were encouraged to write about their achievements at school last term or to write about what they have done so far this term. They were reminded that anyone can view their work over the internet, so to think carefully about what they write and they have been encouraged to write as they would in English – using full sentences and to remember punctuation.
